Miami got a massive win over Texas A&M on Saturday. However, the game was marred by a scary injury to star defensive back Kam Kinchens. The image of him leaving on a cart stuck with everyone involved in the game.

While Kinchens was down on the field, it looked like Mario Cristobal went onto the field and spoke to him. After the game, Cristobal explained his role there and gave a hopeful update on Kinchens.

“Reassurance and being there,” Mario Cristobal said. “That’s as hard as it gets, you know, you’ve got parents in the stands. You’ve got teammates. Football, it’s unforgiving at times. I don’t think that’s the case here, very hopeful and I don’t like to get ahead of myself but I like to think positive and think that everything is trending in the right direction, and we’ll get an update to everybody as soon as we get it.”

Kam Kinchens came to Miami as a four-star recruit in the Class of 2021, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. Since his freshman season, he has made a massive impact on the Hurricanes’ defense, snagging six interceptions last season. He also already has an interception this season.

The injury that saw Kinchens leave the game on a cart was scary, in part, because nobody knew just how severe the injury was. Luckily, after the game, Mario Cristobal was able to give a small but positive update on the star defensive back. After the game, he explained that Kinchens is “relatively normal” following the injury.

It’s obviously unclear how severe the injury is but for him to even be relatively normal is a big deal given the hit that Kinchens took.

Kam Kinchens wants to win a championship

This offseason, Kam Kinchens set a clear goal. He didn’t want another bad season, he wanted to win a national championship alongside his teammates.

“We have more work to do. Last year we were 5-7. I’d rather another banner goes up – a national championship,” Kinchens said.

“It’s all about those times you are grinding with your teammates and know you can trust one another. When those games get real close and that offense needs to score or the defense needs to get a stop, it’s all about trusting one another to do your job. It’s been real great, grasping the playbook better. He’s making sure we grasp it. If we have to ease it down just to build it back up, he’s all about it.”
