Marshall DB transfer D'yoni Hill commits to Miami

Marshall defensive back transfer D’yoni Hill has committed to Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes, On3 has learned. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Hill recently took a visit to Coral Gables, where he told CaneSports’ Izubee Charles that Miami felt like “I am home.” He was targeted by Miami for the entirety of his stay in the transfer portal, entering on April 15 with CaneSports beginning their coverage of his recruitment the following day.

The Gainesville, Florida native spent two seasons playing for the Thundering Herd. He spent his true freshman season in 2022 mostly on special teams, but appeared on defense in one game for Marshall that season and recorded one tackle against UConn in the Myrtle Beach Bowl.

He turned that into a breakout season in 2023 that saw him tie for second place on the team in solo tackles with 34. He totaled 55 on the season, broke up 10 passes, forced one fumble and logged one interception before ultimately transferring over to Miami.

He isn’t the only former Marshall player to be joining Mario Cristobal in South Beach, either. Defensive lineman Elijah Alston committed to the Hurricanes back in January. Other transfers include quarterback Cam Ward, running back Damien Martinez, and defensive lineman CJ Clark, not to mention a slew of other incoming talent.

Both Hill and Alston were coached by new defensive coordinator Lance Guidry at Marshall, who held that role from 2021-22. His 2022 defense would go on to finish the season ranked within the top 10 nationally in 12 separate defensive statistics, which was the Thundering Herd secure an 8-4 record that included a win over Notre Dame in South Bend. Guidry would go on to take the defensive coordinator job at Tulane for the 2023 season before Mario Cristobal signed him as one of his top assistants.

Prior to his collegiate career, Hill actually played high school football in the state of Florida at Gainesville High School, where he was a three-star recruit per the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.

He was rated the No. 1,654 overall prospect in his class, as well as the No. 144 cornerback and No. 232 player out of Florida for his cycle.
