Miami cornerback Demetrius Freeney entered the NCAA transfer portal. He spent one season at Miami and will now look elsewhere.

Freeney, in his lone season, received action in three games, mostly on special teams. Prior to coming to Miami, Freeney spent the 2022 season at San Mateo College.

He logged two interceptions and six pass breakups during the 2022 season.

As a member of the Class of 2022, Freeney was not ranked, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He played his high school football at San Leandro (Calif.) High.

Freeney was the latest player to enter the portal. Head coach Mario Cristobal identified a plan during the spring window earlier this month.

“It starts like right now,” Cristobal said. “This is a whole different phase now. The first part is making sure our people thank all the people that made this [Spring Game] happen. That’s number one.”

For Cristobal and Miami, the key step was to asses what the team needs and the best way to address those needs.

“Then right to what we’ve been doing,” Cristobal said earlier this month. “We’ve been assessing. What’re the areas that clearly need help? What are the ones that we’ve clearly improved at? What can we do well, what maybe we should get away from and not do?”

In the Winter Transfer Portal window, Miami had 20 players transfer out and 10 players transfer into the program. That left the Hurricanes with the 24th-ranked transfer portal class of the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. Among the biggest names that Miami added was quarterback Cam Ward.
