Miami forward Norchad Omier plans to enter NCAA transfer portal

One of the more accomplished forwards in the country is expected to enter the portal, as Jeff Goodman reports that Miami big man Norchad Omier intends to transfer.

He tweeted out that news Thursday in a post which said:

“Miami big man Norchad Omier will go portaling, source told @TheFieldOf68. The 6-7 junior averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game this past season.”

Omier began his career with two seasons at Arkansas State and then transferred to Miami, where he starred the last two seasons. Now, he appears ready to evaluate options ahead of his final year.

As Goodman noted, Omier averaged a 17-10 double double for the 2023-24 season and only added more awards to his trophy closet in the form of a second straight All-ACC appearance. That now marks all four years in which Omier has made an All-Conference team, two in the ACC and two in the Sun Belt.

Omier’s accolades were even grander at the smaller league where he played his first two years. He won the Sun Belt Rookie of the Year award as a freshman who averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds right off the bat. He then won both Sun Belt Player of the Year and Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year in 2021-22 averaging 17 and 12.

He left Arkansas State after that season and found greener pastures in Coral Gables, as most do, becoming part of an elite Hurricane transfer haul that also featured Kansas State sharpshooter Nijel Pack.

Omier, Pack and guys like Jordan Miller and Isaiah Wong came together to form one of the nation’s best offenses, built around Omier’s small-ball center versatility. Of course, they even made somewhat of a surprise run to the Final Four that season.

This loss just made a bad day much worse for Jim Larranaga, who also saw starting guard Wooga Poplar enter the NCAA transfer portal after three seasons with the Hurricanes.

The Philadelphia native started all 29 games he played in last season, averaging 13.1 points per game. He was particularly strong early on in the season, averaging 16 points per game through 15 contests while only scoring 11 per game in conference play.

Either way, another huge addition to the portal for the rest of the country. Omier and Poplar will immediately become major targets for major schools as the transfer portal window draws to a close on May 1 for new entrants.
