Miami Hurricanes defensive lineman Jamil Burroughs entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on Thursday evening, On3’s Pete Nakos has confirmed. Before joining the Hurricanes, he played for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Burroughs played in six games a true freshman for Alabama in 2020. He was setback in 2021, playing in three games and taking a redshirt. He moved into a bigger, rotational role for Alabama in 2022. Burroughs played in 11 games and notched a pair of tackles for loss, including a sack.

Burroughs played high school football at McEachern (Ga.) High School, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 317 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He participated in Nike’s “The Opening” Finals in Frisco, Texas–a camp/competition for some of the nation’s top high school prospects. He was also named to the All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. As a junior, he racked up 58 tackles and five sacks to go along with a blocked field goal.

When he chose Alabama out of high school, he picked them over offers from Georgia, Arkansas, Clemson, and Michigan.

While Miami might be potentially losing Burroughs, they still landed one of the most coveted prospects in the transfer portal this offseason in quarterback Cam Ward.

Ward had initially indicated he planned to go to the NFL Draft but apparently had a change of heart. His change of heart was Miami’s gain, as he was one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the portal.

“I think Miami did a really good job of staying in his ear and trying to recruit him the last few weeks,” On3’s Pete Nakos said on the Andy Staples On3 show. “Cam was training for the NFL in Florida. And I also think he spent a couple weeks evaluating the NFL and college a little bit more and I think that he realized returning to college and going to Miami would only boost his draft stock.”

Cam Ward has a considerable amount of production to fall back on, which adds a level of security to his NFL Draft profile. But he’ll be able to build on that even further with the Hurricanes.

In his career, Ward has thrown for 13,874 yards, with 119 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. He’s coming off a 3,735-yard campaign in 2023.
