Miami has announced that it will retire the jersey of legendary quarterback Gino Torretta in a few weeks.

The ceremony will take place during the Hurricanes’ regular season home finale against Louisville on Nov. 18, Miami announced on Thursday.

Gino Torretta played at Miami from 1989-1992, leading the Hurricanes to the national championship in 1991. Torretta also started four games during the 1989 season when Miami won the national title.

“We are excited to announce the retirement of Gino Torretta’s No. 13 jersey,” Miami AD Dan Radakovich said in a statement. “Gino is the most decorated college player in University of Miami football history and is also a member of our Ring of Honor, which serves as the highest honor for a Hurricanes football player or coach. We look forward to recognizing Gino and his family at Hard Rock Stadium on November 18.”

In addition to being a part of two national title teams, Gino Torretta also won the Heisman Trophy award in 1992.

He finished his college career with a 26-2 record as a starter and as the holder of 11 school records, including career passing attempts (991), completions (555), passing yards (7,690), total offense (7,772), single-game passing yards (485) and longest touchdown pass (99 yards, tied for the NCAA record). He still ranks in Miami’s top five in career passing yards, attempts and completions.

“Gino Torretta was a great quarterback in a lot of different ways,” said Dennis Erickson, who was Torretta’s head coach and won two national championships at Miami. “He was smart. He knew the offense in and out. He was a great competitor, a leader, and most importantly a winner.”

In addition to winning the Heisman in 1992, Torretta also earned the Maxwell Award, the Davey O’Brien Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Chevrolet Offensive Player of the Year, the Toyota Leadership Award, the Hitachi/CFA Scholar Athlete of Year, and the NCAA Top VI Award.

Gino Torretta ended up being drafted in the seventh round of the 1993 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings, with the No. 192 overall pick.

He went on to spend six seasons in the NFL, playing for the Vikings, Lions, 49ers, Seahawks, Colts and Chiefs.

Miami is currently 6-2 (2-2) entering Saturday’s game at NC State. The Hurricanes also have upcoming games against Florida State, Louisville and Boston College.

The Hurricanes have won two straight games — both in overtime — having beaten Clemson and Virginia the past two weeks.
