Mario Cristobal addresses which starting positions are still up for grabs for Miami
Position battles have been going on all fall camp for Miami, with head coach Mario Cristobal having some decisions to make throughout his first game week. The Hurricanes will start with Bethune-Cookman and are just two weeks out from a nonconference matchup against Texas A&M on the road.
Cristobal detailed a few of the battles happening, saying the boys up front still have a couple of spots to determine. He said the depth at defensive line is “thick,” which some offensive line positions have a few holes to plus. However, one group Cristobal said there’s some confidence in, no matter who is playing is in the secondary. Some clarity to the depth chart will be there by the middle of the week.

“Well, we’re a little more thick (on defense),” Cristobal said. “We’re a little more thick on the defensive line, where those battles have been going back and forth the entire camp. There’s a couple at the O-Line position. There’s more clarity at some of the others. In the secondary, we feel like we have multiple guys that can play winning football. Really, really battles where nobody has backed down, which is encouraging.
“To make your team really good, you want to see that happen, for that to be a reality. All in all, what we feel is that by midweek, we should have some more clarity. But when you have positions where multiple guys are going to play, you just let it ride.”

Mario Cristobal says “our guys know” who is going to play
Cristobal may not publicly state who is going to receive playing time but the head coach claims “our guys know” based on practice. He says tape never lies and if a player has performed well, they are going to see the field for Miami.
“Our guys know. There’s no mind tricks or whatnot. Our guys know who is going to play. At practice, tape never tells a lie. Guys who have done well have earned playing time. They’re going to play. Those that haven’t we’re going to keep working with them until they’re ready to play.”
Year One will need to start with a bang, as Cristobal is looking to change the momentum at Miami. With some non-Power Five opponents on the schedule, there will most likely be some time for Cristobal to figure his exact rotation out.
