Miami Hurricanes name captains ahead of Week 3 matchup vs. Bethune-Cookman
The Miami Hurricanes (2-0) are riding high off their impressive 48-33 win over the Texas A&M Aggies (1-1) in Week 2. ‘Canes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke returned to his once elite form, completing 21 of 30 passes for 374 yards, while tossing five touchdowns with no interceptions. In Week 3, they’ll take the field against Bethune-Cookman, a team they absolutely annihilated last year to the tune of a 70-13 beatdown. On Wednesday evening, the Hurricanes named their captains ahead of this year’s matchup with the Wildcats.
There will be four captains for Miami this weekend’s game: tight end Cam McCormick, wide receiver Xavier Restrepo, linebacker Corey Flagg, Jr., and cornerback Jaden Davis.
Cam McCormick is a senior tight end from Oregon. Last week against Texas A&M, he hauled in a 20-yard catch. That’s his only catch on the season thus far. He played the first seven seasons of his college football career with the Oregon Ducks. McCormick has battled a number of season-ending injuries throughout his career, which a big part of why he’s been playing for so long. He decided to enter the transfer portal and play his final season with Miami.
Xavier Restrepo is a dynamic wide receiver who currently leads Miami’s receiving corps in both catches (11) and receiving yards (191). He posted big numbers last week against the Texas A&M secondary, hauling in six catches for 126 receiving yards. He missed five games during the 2022 campaign, but posted career-best numbers last year against Bethune Cookman, hauling in five catches for 100 receiving yards, including a 52-yard touchdown catch. As a true freshman in 2021, he hauled in 24 catches for 373 receiving yards. As a high school prospect, he was rated as the No. 643 prospect in the country and a three-star recruit, according to the On3 Industry Rankings for the 2020 cycle.
Corey Flagg is a linebacker that has racked up seven tackles thus far in the 2023 campaign for Miami. He’s one of team’s standout performers on defense. In the 2022 and 2021 seasons, Flagg was one of the team’s top tacklers. Last year, he racked up 56 total tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss, tying for the team lead in tackles for loss. In 2021, in 12 games, Flagg racked up a team-high 60 tackles and seven tackles for loss, including three sacks. Before enrolling at Miami, he played his high school football at North Shore (Houston, Texas). In the 2020 cycle, he was ranked as a three-star prospect and the No. 672 overall player in America, according to the On3 Industry Rankings.

Jaden Davis is a cornerback that currently ranks second on the team in tackles with 11. Before joining Miami, he spent the first four seasons of his college football career with the Oklahoma Sooners. There, he finished with 104 total tackles, one interception, and 10 pass breakups. Coming out of St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Florida), he was rated as a four-star prospect, according to the On3 Industry Rankings.
Former Miami head coach Mark Richt will be honored
Another key piece of information to note for Miami this weekend–former head coach Mark Richt will serve as the team’s honorary captain for Week 3. While serving as the head coach of the ‘Canes from 2016-2018, Richt finished with a 26-13 overall record, including a 16-8 record in the ACC. He’s set to be inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame on December 5th. Richt will be honored with the Hall of Fame On Campus Salute on Thursday night.
Miami and Bethune Cookman will square off on Thursday, Sept. 14th. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 PM EST and the game will be televised on the ACC Network.
