Miami will be looking to set the tone in Year One of head coach Mario Cristobal. It’s a brand new era but transition into a more successful period, some leadership will be needed from not just the coaching staff but some players as well. Quarterback is usually a safe place to look, as Tyler Van Dyke is set to step up for the Hurricanes throughout the 2022 season.

Van Dyke was asked about his leadership style, saying there are times to be vocal and other times to stay quiet. He wants to be a positive influence for everyone, especially on the offense. The quarterback also thinks because of his position, it’s his job to be a team leader.

“I like to keep my calm and be poised,” Van Dyke said. “I believe there are times where you have to get on the offense or get on a certain player. Then, times where leadership really has to step up. Usually, I’m poised and let the guys do their thing, make the plays. I feel like when we’re down, need a bump up, as a quarterback, you have to do that, and lead the guys.”

Although he did not begin the year as the starter, Van Dyke was quickly thrown into the role during the 2021 season. He started the final nine games, throwing for 2,931 yards and 25 touchdowns. The consistent play has always been there for Van Dyke but now, it’s time to help boost his team as well.

Mario Cristobal evaluates Tyler Van Dyke, quarterback room

Cristobal is excited about his quarterback play so far this offseason but knows there is plenty of room to improve. That much was evident Saturday when Miami had its first fall scrimmage.

In an interview afterward, Cristobal said the offense showed flashes but needs to be more consistent to reach its goals this season. The coach made sure to be clear that extends to the entire team, not just the quarterbacks.

“We made explosive plays and showed our capability of making explosive plays,” Cristobal said. “Then we came up short on some that were there to be had. It was a breakdown at one position or another. It wasn’t just that we had a breakdown at quarterback. We had a breakdown at tight end, running back, offensive line at the process with the signal coming in. I think everyone took a turn today.”
