Miami makes official announcement on parting ways with Blake James
The Miami Hurricanes made an official statement on parting ways with athletic director Blake James on Monday and their search for a replacement. In the announcement, James’ parting words for the University were included.
Miami’s official statement on Blake James
“The University of Miami and Director of Athletics Blake James today mutually agreed to part ways,” read the university’s official statement. “James’ 17 years at the University — including eight as athletics director — were marked by class and integrity. He served in several ACC and NCAA leadership roles and earned national recognition from his peers during his time with the Hurricanes.
“A national search for the University’s next athletics director will begin immediately.”
“It has been an honor to lead Miami athletics and to be a part of such a world-class institution,” said James in the statement. “I am proud of the work that we have done together, though I know there is still more yet to be achieved. I want to thank our University leadership, our athletics staff, our coaches, and especially our incredible student-athletes for their commitment to excellence and for believing in what the University of Miami can accomplish. I wish the Canes nothing but the best and look forward to my next endeavors.”
Miami’s interim athletic director
“Deputy athletic director/senior woman administrator Jenn Strawley will serve as Miami’s interim AD during search for new AD, source told The Action Network,” reported Brett McMurphy of The Action Network.
The news of Strawley being picked as interim AD came quickly after the University of Miami parted ways with athletic director Blake James. James has been the AD for the Hurricanes since 2013.

The decision came on Monday, a mere two days after the Hurricanes football team blew an eight-point lead against Florida State.
Miami is on its third head football coach since James took over. The team is currently 5-5 this year under coach Manny Diaz, who is 19-15 in his tenure.
After entering the season at No. 14 in the AP poll, the Hurricanes opened the year by getting blown out against Alabama. They quickly fell out of the poll following a second loss to Michigan State and have gone 3-3 against conference opponents this season.
Jim Larranaga has led the basketball team for the entire time James has been AD, though that program has struggled recently as well. The Hurricanes have missed out on the NCAA Tournament for three straight seasons.
