Miami Hurricanes quarterback Reese Poffenbarger has entered the Transfer Portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

Prior to his time with Miami, Poffenbarger played for Albany at the FCS level. In two seasons at Albany, he threw for 5,969 yards, 56 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. He also flashed some ability to run the ball from the quarterback position, going for 187 yards and five touchdowns in his final season there.

In 2022, he was the CAA Offensive Rookie of the Year before he led the Great Danes to the FCS playoffs in 2023.

While at Miami, Reese Poffenbarger has largely been overshadowed by another quarterback who came in as a transfer, Cam Ward. Still, Poffenbarger appeared in four games and completed six of seven pass attempts for 20 yards. He also carried the ball five times for 12 yards this season.

Reese Poffenbarger played his high school football at Middletown in Maryland. There, he was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2021, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the 91st-ranked quarterback and the 1,686th-ranked player overall in that recruiting cycle. He initially began his career at Old Dominion.

The decision to transfer comes as Miami is on the College Football Playoff bubble. With the latest rankings listing Miami behind Alabama, the Hurricanes will likely be on the outside looking in and need to settle for one of the better bowl games.

While Cam Ward became the dominant quarterback in all of the ACC and arguably all of college football, some backups at Miami did get some opportunities to play this season, particularly during large wins. Along with Reese Poffenbarger, the Hurricanes also played Emory Williams in those situations and he actually threw for 161 yards and a touchdown, getting more opportunities than Poffenbarger.

Reese Poffenbarger will have one season of eligibility remaining. He will likely be looking for an opportunity to earn playing time in that season.
