The Miami Hurricanes took their first loss of the season this weekend as they fell to No. 24 ranked Texas A&M 17-9. Miami’s offense definitely struggled to score the football, and quarterback Tyler Van Dyke detailed exactly what went wrong for the Hurricane’s offense.

“We beat ourselves, obviously a great team we played. They have a great defense, did a great job of keeping us out of the end zone, but we gotta be better in the red zone,” Van Dyke said. “We gotta score and we had so many opportunities to do so, just gotta get better from it and we’re gonna go back to work this week.”

Van Dyke ended the game completing 21 of his 41 pass attempts for 217 yards, but failed to get the ball in the end zone for the Hurricanes. Their nine points came exclusively from field goals, as the offense looked stagnant and lacked explosiveness throughout the game. Van Dyke explained what he could’ve done better individually to help lift his team out of their scoring funk.

“I gotta be a little more accurate, at certain times in the game, just gotta make throws. Obviously getting pressured, getting hit, at the same time make a throw, but that’s what it’s all about. That’s what playing quarterback at Miami is and playing in these big games, you got to make throws pressure in your face. Just gotta get better from that,” Van Dyke said.

Miami won the time of possession battle, as their offense had the ball for 34 minutes Saturday. They even had four drives of 12 or more plays, but simply could not touch the paint. Van Dyke talked about their struggles in the red zone Saturday, and what they need to improve on in that area.

“We just gotta be more physical and just get the ball in the end zone,” Van Dyke explained. “We did move the ball really well, going down having bad field position early in the game and at certain times of the game we moved the ball. We just gotta finish in the red zone, just be more physical than the other team and just understand that you gotta score touchdowns.”

The Hurricanes have one more chance to clean up their offensive woes before conference play begins for them, as they take on Middle Tennessee State in week 4 before playing eight straight ACC games starting off against UNC on October 8.
