Michigan transfer guard Tre Donaldson announced his commitment to Miami and new head coach Jai Lucas Thursday from his Instagram account. Donaldson’s commitment to the new-look Hurricanes comes just two days after formally entering the NCAA Transfer Portal following a sensational junior season in Ann Arbor.

Donaldson joins Miami with one season of college eligibility after beginning his career at Auburn. There, he started 10 games and averaged 19.6 minutes per game as a sophomore in 2023-24 before transferring to Michigan last offseason.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Donaldson had a career year in Ann Arbor, averaging 11.3 points, 4.1 assists, 3.5 points and 31.1 minutes per game while shooting 43.3-percent from the floor and 37.5-percent from 3-point range in 2024-25.

Donaldson had his best performance of the season in Michigan’s 94-75 blowout win over UCLA on Jan. 7. The Bruins were ranked No. 22 in the country at the time. In the victory, Donaldson tallied a season-high 20 points, six rebounds and seven assists on 6-of-10 shooting from 3-point range.

Unfortunately for Michigan, Donaldson didn’t find a similar shooting rhythm in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. He scored just five points on 2-of-9 shooting in the Wolverines’ season-ending loss against Auburn in the Sweet Sixteen. Despite Donaldson’s uncharacteristically quiet performance, he’s not a player who shies away from big moments.

”This is who I am. My teammates are trusting me and my ability to make shots and it is just it’s great. My confidence is great. This is the best basketball I’ve played in my life,” Donaldson said after Michigan’s win over Texas A&M in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. “When it’s time to make big plays, when the opportunity presents itself, I just want to attack it as best as possible if it’s presenting itself to me. I want my teammates to do the same thing.”

It’s a return to his home state for Donaldson, a four-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting cylce out of Florida State University High School (Tallahassee, Fla.), who was the No. 127 overall player and No. 22 point guard in the 2022 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
