New Mexico transfer G Tru Washington commits to Miami

New Mexico transfer guard Tru Washington has committed to Miami, On3’s Joe Tipton reported. He played the past two seasons for the Lobos and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Washington moved from a bench role to a starter from his freshman to sophomore seasons. He went from averaging 6.6 points last season to 11.1 in 2024-25 while also contributing 4.0 rebounds and 2.1 steals. He was named honorable mention All-Mountain West.
Washington played high school basketball at Compass Prep in Phoenix, Arizona, where he was a three-star prospect. He ranked as the No. 129 overall player and No. 9 combo guard in the 2023 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
This transfer cycle, Washington ranks as the No. 104 overall player and No. 6 combo guard according to On3. He joins a Hurricanes team that is coming off of 7-24 finish this past season after coach Jim Larranaga announced his retirement midway through the year. Miami was just two years removed from making the Final Four in 2023.
The Hurricanes have seen quite an exodus through the transfer portal this season with nine players already leaving the program. Washington is now the fourth player that they’ve added, but it’s clear they have a lot more work to do as they prapre for Jai Lucas to take over as head coach.

The college basketball transfer portal officially opened for business on Monday, March 24, and will close on Tuesday, April 22. As of this writing, more than 1,000 players had already entered their names.
Last spring alone, 1,962 Division I players tested the portal waters. Based on the early numbers from this year, even more could follow. For the first time in history, more than half of the points scored in college basketball were scored by players from the transfer portal, not high school, in the 2024-25 season.
In data gathered over the first two years with transfer windows, the NCAA found most athletes enter the portal within the first four weeks of the portal opening. The study showed that 73% of men’s and women’s basketball undergraduate athletes entered during the first four weeks. That increased to 82% for men and 86% for women in 2024.
