Former Michigan State defensive lineman Simeon Barrow committed to Miami Friday, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett. He entered the transfer portal as a graduate student during the spring window after four years in East Lansing.

Barrow is coming off an impressive three-year run with the Spartans, but put up his best numbers in 2022. He totaled 40 tackles, including 9.0 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks to set career highs in all three categories. He followed that up with 36 tackles, 5.5 TFL and 3.5 sacks this past season as a key piece of the MSU defense.

After entering the portal, Barrow came in as the No. 73 overall player and No. 7-ranked defensive lineman in the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings. In addition to Miami, he also visited Missouri and LSU during the transfer process, and he spoke with On3’s Pete Nakos about how those visits went. Ultimately, the Hurricanes won out for Barrow’s services.

Barrow played high school football at Grovetown (Ga.) High School, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 785 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Miami making waves on recruiting trail ahead of Year 3 under Mario Cristobal

Miami has been active in the portal this cycle, now bringing in 14 commitments with Simeon Barrow’s commitment. The Hurricanes’ biggest splash came at quarterback when Cam Ward – who initially announced his plans to enter the NFL Draft – committed in January. He heads to Coral Gables as the No. 9 overall player in the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings.

Mario Cristobal then made waves with another recent commitment, landing former Oregon State running back Damien Martinez. He announced his decision last week, giving Miami a high-powered runner to add to the offense following a 7-6 record in 2023.

The Hurricanes’ talent infusion isn’t just from the portal, though. Miami also has the No. 5-ranked recruiting class coming in, according to the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. The group includes three five-star prospects – defensive lineman Justin Scott, EDGE Marquise Lightfoot and defensive lineman Armando Blount.

Miami will now turn its attention to summer workouts before final preparations for the season opener against Florida on Aug. 31.
