If not for turnovers, Miami might have come away with a different outcome in a critical game against North Carolina. Alas, the turnovers came early and often.

Miami turned it over four times and quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was harassed by hard hits throughout the game.

“I mean I’m hurting, but we’ve got to be better honestly,” Van Dyke said after the game. “I feel fine right now, but we’ve got to be better. Too many critical situations, turnovers, making mistakes. We’ve got to fix all that stuff.”

Miami fell behind in the third quarter when North Carolina really took control of the game, taking advantage of a Miami fumble and an interception to score 21 points in the quarter.

By that point, the game was slipping away from Miami, at 35-17.

A bad snap was a killer, ending the first Miami drive of the second half after North Carolina had scored a touchdown to take the lead on its first drive after the break.

“Just a little low snap, but I’ve got to get it,” Van Dyke said. “It hit my hand, left hand. I’ve got to get it. Just got to be better in terms of handling the football. Just like I said, turnovers in critical situations.”

The game finished relatively even in terms of total yardage, with the Tar Heels outgaining the Hurricanes only 508 to 482.

But the killer stat was the turnover column, where Miami hung a four and North Carolina posted a clean zero. That was the key factor in the 41-31 loss by Miami.

Still, even after a second loss, Van Dyke and the Hurricanes are keeping their heads held high, ready to play out the rest of the season and make sure the year doesn’t go in the tank.

“I mean this team is special. We know what we’re capable of,” Van Dyke said. “We can’t fold. We’re going to make sure we have the entire team as leaders, just keep going. It’s still a long season left. We’ve got to do our best to win games. That’s the main thing, just win and obviously do better during the game and not make those mistakes in critical situations.”
