Mario Cristobal provides Tyler Van Dyke injury update: He's 'better than he was a week ago'
Following a humbling 45-3 defeat to Florida State on Saturday, Miami will be looking to bounce back and finish a rocky first season under new head coach Mario Cristobal on a high note. But how quarterback Tyler Van Dyke‘s injury status progresses could have a lot to do with that.
Cristobal shared a brief update on Van Dyke’s status on Monday.
“Tyler, we’re going to evaluate Tyler as the week goes on,” Cristobal said. “Probably in the same spot we were a week ago. But I would say he’s better than he was a week ago at this time.”
Van Dyke did end up playing in Saturday’s contest against Florida State, returning to start before the right shoulder injury that has plagued him caused him issues in the second quarter.
He finished the game just 4-of-8 passing for 24 yards and left the game for good after briefly attempting a return.
Miami, at 4-5 on the season, still needs two more wins to become bowl eligible and having a healthy Van Dyke the rest of the way would be a significant boost. The Hurricanes will be back in action this weekend on the road at Georgia Tech.

Van Dyke has gone 156-of-245 passing for 1,761 yards and 10 touchdowns, with four interceptions, so far this season. He’s been far and away the most productive quarterback, though the Hurricanes have now gotten a decent look at two others.
If Tyler Van Dyke injury prevents him from playing, backups will keep gaining experience
With Tyler Van Dyke’s injury status day to day, Miami might be forced to continue playing its two backup quarterbacks.
Jake Garcia and Jacurri Brown have both seen snaps with Van Dyke sidelined.
Garcia threw just two passes on Saturday, with one of them intercepted. Brown got a bit more work, going 5-of-9 passing for 37 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.
However, Brown adds some rushing ability that is also sorely needed. He was the team’s leading rusher in the game against the Seminoles, finishing with a team-high 13 carries for 64 yards.
