Tyler Van Dyke not letting football 'consume his happiness' after Miami fans cheer against him
Tyler Van Dyke, through all of the ups and downs at Miami, won’t let football “consume his happiness.”
The Hurricanes signal caller has been in and out of the starting lineup due to injuries and rollercoaster play. Fans even cheered against him playing recently.
So since it’s been a rough year for Van Dyke and the Hurricanes, who were once again pegged as an ACC preseason contender, the quarterback put it into perspective.
“My grandfather has been a really good person to talk to,” Van Dyke said. “He grew up an athlete, played football, baseball and coached Division 1 football and baseball as well. So he kind of understands the situation I’m in. I’ve kind of leaned on him and my mom, my dad, you know, just just the people in my circle. So at the end of the day, I’m not gonna let football consume my happiness, you know?”
This season, in nine games, Van Dyke has 2,086 yards, 16 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 66.7% completion percentage. Miami is 6-4 and hosts No. 10 Louisville this weekend.

Tyler Van Dyke puts Miami season into perspective
“I love playing football and I want to accomplish my dreams of playing college football and playing in the NFL, so I’m gonna do my best and I love the game,” Van Dyke said. “But at the end of the day, I’m not gonna let that consume my happiness, you know, and I don’t want to be upset the rest of my life because football didn’t go my way.
“I just kind of learned that throughout the process of the last few weeks and maybe that was the life lesson that God was trying to teach me. There’s things that you can be grateful for when things go badly and then because of lessons you learn from it.”
As far as the fans booing him when he’s played recently, Van Dyke didn’t take it personally.
“I don’t even know they were vocal about it,” Van Dyke said jokingly. “I mean, obviously playing quarterback here at the University of Miami, they expect a lot of things from you. Their expectations are high and if you don’t play well, yeah, you’re gonna get a lot of that. Ut’s pretty much anywhere you go in Power Five football and in the NFL.
“So that’s a part of the business and you know, I love being a Miami Hurricane and yeah, I mean, it’s part of the business. You’re gonna get that if you don’t play well. And you know, I don’t have Instagram, Twitter or anything like that, so I don’t see it, but I assume it’s like that.”
