Gary Ferman and JD PicKell Discuss the Success of Miami Early Into the 2023 Season

Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke has put any thoughts of his struggles last year behind him with his play through the first three games of the season. The Hurricanes are 3-0 and Van Dyke has reestablished himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC.

After Thursday night’s 48-7 victory over Bethune-Cookman, Van Dyke explained how good he was feeling about his play at the moment.

“I feel like I’m the best I’ve ever been accuracy wise, seeing the field,” Van Dyke said. “Again I’m gonna give credit to the offensive line. I’m sitting back there all day, having all this time, just allows me to be precise and accurate. Obviously the receivers do a great job getting open, making good catches. Just got to keep it going.”

Through the first three games of the season, Van Dyke is 57 of 75 throwing the football for 822 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception.

Against the Wildcats, Van Dyke was 19 of 23 for 247 yards and two scores. He got to sit and watch his backup Emory Williams.

Many players at every position on offense earned the opportunity to play and get reps during the Bethune-Cookman game. Four different running backs ran the ball at least seven times, and all four gained at least 40 yards. Ten different players caught a pass.

Van Dyke praise offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and how the team has responded to his offense.

“I think guys just bought into it. Trusted Coach Dawson, trusted how he wants us to run his plays,” Van Dyke said. “We’ve just been doing a great job of really executing. That’s what it’s all about. Making the throws, making the catches, run blocking, pass blocking. That’s why it’s about – executing.”

Miami is now 3-0 for the first time since the 2020 season when Van Dyke was just a freshman. The team hopes to continue its upward trajectory going forward, although their schedule is about to get much tougher.

The team has one more non-conference game versus Temple before a bye week and then the start of ACC play. The. Hurricanes first game is against Georgia Tech following by a game versus North Carolina.

“I think we learned how to handle success a little bit,” Van Dyke told ACC Network’s Marilyn Payne after the game. “That’s one of the hardest things to do. You don’t want to get complacent. We came out and handled in business tonight.”
