Tyler Van Dyke reveals how he changed his body during offseason
A frustrating 2022 season for Miami Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was cut short due to injuries. In 2023, he’s determined to have a better performance and to stay healthy, so, he’s worked to change his body.
As Fall practice gets started, Van Dyke explained how he’s worked to change his body this offseason.
“I lost like 2.5 percent in body fat,” Tyler Van Dyke said. “I feel faster, more mobile, side to side. Feel a lot better about that.”
Last season, Van Dyke rushed for -34 yards on the season. That’s largely because sacks impact a quarterback’s rushing stats. As a team, the Hurricanes struggled on the offensive line in 2022, giving up three sacks a game. So, while Van Dyke won’t ever be confused as a scrambler, that had a massive impact on his rushing numbers and was a key factor in getting injured.
Adding more mobility with less body fat should help avoid that issue again. It also won’t hurt that Miami jumped into the transfer portal to try and bolster the offensive line.

Tyler Van Dyke also clarified that his playing weight hasn’t changed, just his body fat percentage.
“It’s the same weight. Just 2.5 percent less than I was…I was up near 15 percent, like 14.9, and now I’m down to 12.3.”
With practice underway, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal praised how Tyler Van Dyke has been playing so far.
“He looks good, he looks really good. He looks comfortable but urgent, does that make sense? So he understands the offense, he gets after it, he’s very proactive with his teammates, and getting extra work in, making sure everybody’s on the same page,” Cristobal said. “And he’s practicing with a lot of just … intense. He looks very intentional in everything he does which is always a blessing when your quarterback takes that type of initiative. So very pleased, fired up, happy for him, all that stuff.”
Tyler Van Dyke shared his goal for the 2023 season
During the 2023 ACC Football Kickoff, Tyler Van Dyke shared his goal for the 2023 season.
“Last year didn’t go as planned,” Van Dyke said. “Yeah, it’s a new year. I think everything happens for a reason. You go through times of adversity for a reason. We’re just looking forward to this year, taking it one day at a time, staying focused in the present. Our goal is just to win. Just take it one day at a time, as I said, and just win.”
