Gary Ferman and JD PicKell Discuss the Success of Miami Early Into the 2023 Season

Miami is hitting on all cylinders through three games after Thursday night’s 48-7 win over Bethune-Cookman. The Hurricanes are specifically thriving on the offensive end as QB Tyler Van Dyke is loving their system under new OC Shannon Dawson.

Van Dyke commented on the smooth operation of the Miami offense while speaking with the media postgame last night. To him, Dawson’s fit and style have been as seamless as they’ve looked because of how the Hurricanes have trusted him early and then gone out and performed in his plays.

“I think guys just bought into it. Trusted Coach Dawson, trusted how he wants us to run his plays,” said Van Dyke. “We’ve just been doing a great job of really executing. That’s what it’s all about. Making the throws, making the catches, run blocking, pass blocking. That’s why it’s about – executing.”

In three appearances so far this season, Miami’s offense has been a well-oiled machine. They’ve averaged 44.7 points, 511 yards, and 5.3 touchdowns per game. That includes last night’s win over the Wildcats where they scored 48, put up 589 yards of offense, and score seven touchdowns.

In comparison, after three games last season, Miami averaged 36.3 points, 433.3 yards, and four touchdowns. Much of that came in a single performance in last year’s 70-3 win over Bethune-Cookman in the season opener.

Van Dyke has also looked much more like the player that we saw in 2021. In their three wins, he has completed 57/75 passes (76%) for 822 yards, eight touchdowns, and only one pick.

For Van Dyke, Miami’s offense is very simple. Dawson calls the quality plays for them and he and his teammates just go out and perform at the best of their abilities.

“Coach Dawson has been doing a great job of calling great plays and getting us in the right positions at the right times. All we have to do is execute,” said Van Dyke.

Van Dyke reveals how Miami ‘learned how to handle success’ in win

After winning just five games a year ago, Tyler Van Dyke and Miami now sit at 3-0 following last night’s 48-7 victory over Bethune-Cookman.

To Van Dyke, Miami will have success if it doesn’t get too comfortable with the lead. On Thursday night, the Hurricanes showed they could handle that.

“I think we learned how to handle success a little bit,” Van Dyke told ACC Network’s Marilyn Payne after the game. “That’s one of the hardest things to do. You don’t want to get complacent. We came out and handled in business tonight.”

Van Dyke continued to look good following his impressive start to the season, throwing for 247 yards and two touchdowns on an efficient 19-23 passing. He also ran in a touchdown for the second time in his career.
