Washington transfer safety Mishael Powell commits to Miami Hurricanes
The Miami Hurricanes plucked a prospect out of the transfer portal on Wednesday evening, landing the commitment of former Washington safety Mishael Powell. He made the announcement on his Twitter page.

Powell had been a member of the Washington program for the past five seasons. After redshirting as a freshman and not playing his first two years, he appeared in over 30 games with double-digit starts over the past three seasons.
In that time, Powell recorded 92 tackles, nine deflections, three interceptions with one pick-six, and a forced fumble. In 2023, Powell posted 38 tackles, all three of his picks, and a career-best in deflections with six.
His interception score was the crucial, deciding play against Arizona State this season as he returned it for 89 yards to give the Huskies their first and final lead of the game against the Sun Devils.
Powell played high school football at O’Dea (WA) as a member of the 2019 cycle. As a senior, he had 52 tackles and five interceptions. He was also named to the all-state first team for the Seattle Times that season. As a junior, the team went 12-1 and won the 3A state championship.
Miami has landed a number of talented prospects from the portal this offseason, with none of them being bigger than dual-threat quarterback, Cam Ward.

Ward had initially indicated he planned to go to the NFL Draft but apparently had a change of heart. His change of heart is Miami’s gain, as he was one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the portal.
“I think Miami did a really good job of staying in his ear and trying to recruit him the last few weeks,” On3’s Pete Nakos said on the Andy Staples On3 show. “Cam was training for the NFL in Florida. And I also think he spent a couple weeks evaluating the NFL and college a little bit more and I think that he realized returning to college and going to Miami would only boost his draft stock.”
Cam Ward has a considerable amount of production to fall back on, which adds a level of security to his NFL Draft profile. But he’ll be able to build on that even further with the Hurricanes.
In his career, Ward has thrown for 13,874 yards, with 119 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. He’s coming off a 3,735-yard campaign in 2023.
On3’s Nick Schultz also contributed to this article.
