Miami head coach Jim Larranaga was doused with water upon entering the Hurricanes locker room after defeating the Iowa State Cyclones 70-56 in the Sweet 16 Friday night. His team chanted ‘ACC’ while Larranaga busted out a little dance move following the win.

It was certainly a proper celebration for a Hurricanes program that is currently on its longest NCAA Tournament run in history.

Miami led Iowa State for 38 minutes and 38 seconds, dominating the game from start to finish and leading the entire second half. The Hurricanes scored the first seven points of the second half and never looked back, leading by as much as 14 points down the stretch, which ended up being the difference on the final scoreboard.

Larranaga joked that the ACC was apparently in a down year, which was the general consensus from national media throughout the 2021-22 season. Top to bottom, the ACC wasn’t as deep this season as it typically is — but the entire conference proved everyone wrong. The ACC has three teams (Duke, North Carolina, Miami) in the Elite Eight, which is the most of any conference in the country.

Miami themselves were picked to finish 12th in the conference in the preseason rankings, but a late season run from Larranaga’s squad helped secure an NCAA Tournament berth after bouncing around the bubble for the last couple months of the regular season.

Sitting at 6-1 in March with the only loss coming to fellow ACC foe Duke in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. They pushed the Blue Devils to the limit but ultimately came up short. The Hurricanes are playing their best basketball right now and have no intentions of turning that engine off when they play again on Sunday.

The prospect of an ACC matchup in the Final Four between Duke and North Carolina seems too good to be true as Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski is inching closer to retirement every game. Miami would have to wait until the championship to battle either of the blue bloods, if it were to continue its run into next week.

Before Miami can battle either ACC blue bloods, they’ll have to go through another perennial NCAA powerhouse in the now winningest program in college basketball — the Kansas Jayhawks in the Elite Eight on Sunday. Tip off is set for 2:20 p.m. ET on Sunday live on CBS with a shot at the Final Four on the line. The winner will play either Villanova or Houston in New Orleans next week.
