Hialeah (Fla.) Westland Hialeah four-star cornerback Jamari Howard decommitted from Michigan State last month, but the Spartans have remained a contender in his recruitment.

He initially planned to take his official visit there earlier this month, but told On3 that he’ll be in East Lansing this weekend instead.

Rutgers is the only other program to host him for an official visit this month, but in-state schools Miami, Florida and Florida State remain a threat. And each got him on campus this spring for a visit before he decommitted from the Spartans.

“Me and family had a talk and we discussed opening up my recruitment and make the best decision for me at the end of the day,” Howard said last month.

He originally planned to visit Florida last weekend, but chose to participate in the OT7 Finals in Los Angeles instead, but told On3 that he planned to reschedule that visit for a later date.

Howard has strong connection with Michigan State’s staff

Early this spring, Howard said that he was still ‘locked in’ with the Spartans but wanted a chance to look around at other schools. But his longstanding connection to MSU’s staff was what made him commit there in the first place and what keeps them in the mix even after his decommitment.

“The coaches at Michigan State is what it is about for me,” Howard said at the time. “What Coach Tuck and his staff are doing has me strong with my commitment. The defense, how Michigan State is coming back and how I believe the staff can coach me and develop me as a player keeps me locked in.”

The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder is the No. 75 overall prospect in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 10 cornerback and the No. 14 recruit in Florida.

On3 is slightly higher on him than other services though, tabbing him as the nation’s No. 44 prospect, No. 5 cornerback and No. 7 recruit in the Sunshine State.
