Jaden Akins injury update: Tom Izzo reveals what happened to Michigan State guard
Although looking like he was injured in the final minutes of this weekend’s game, Jaden Akins was alright for Michigan State.
Tom Izzo explained what happened to Akins late in the 86-69 win for the Spartans over Florida Atlantic on Saturday. He thought he had harmed his shoulder at first, which would have been more of an issue, but said that the senior guard was just hit in the eye.
“You know what, I thought he got his shoulder so I was worried about that. But he got poked in the eye too so that was, that was the reason,” Izzo said postgame. “It doesn’t seem to be anything. He wasn’t, you know – he was good, eye a little red.”
Akins, their leading scorer, was right at his averages this season in the win over FAU. He posted 13 points, five rebounds, and a pair of assists while shooting 46.2% from the field and 25% from three on one make from distance.
With that, Akins is averaging a career-best of 13.3 ppg. on career-high shooting from the field at 45.2% but on a career-low percentage from deep at 27.1%. He’s also posting 4.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists, both of which are also career-highs.

Now, with more than a week until their next game against Western Michigan, Izzo knows Akins will be fine by then.
“Nothing that’s going to be, at least in college – I think he’ll still play in the next month,” joked Izzo.
