WATCH: James Harden shares incredible moment with survivor of Michigan State shooting

John Hao, 20, is one of the survivors of last week’s shooting at Michigan State that killed three people and injured five others. He’s still in the hospital, paralyzed from the waist down, and one of his favorite NBA players share an incredible moment with him.
Philadelphia 76ers star James Harden got word of Hao’s fandom, as ESPN’s Malika Andrews shared on NBA Today on Thursday, and wanted to help put a smile on his face. He sent sneakers — including one pair he wore during a game — and got in touch with Hao via FaceTime.
It won’t be the last time they talk, either. Harden told Hao to keep in touch and, hopefully, come to a game.
“Everything will work itself out,” Harden told Hao. “Be strong. You’re alright. You’ll be alright. I promise you are. … I love when you’re smiling, alright? I’m with you. I know it’s tough right now but you have to stay physically strong, you know what I mean? You just got to think positive things and keep pushing and keep fighting. I got you.”

Michigan State honored the victims of the shooting at the first home game after it happened, leaving eight seats empty in the Izzone behind the scorer’s table. Spartans head coach Tom Izzo — whose son is a student at MSU — also got emotional as he spoke about and preparing for the game.
“I was appreciative that I’m at Michigan State,” Izzo said. “I wish I could have ran up to that top row and thanked the people that were there. I did, I just looked around. That’s all I did was look around. And all the bad set times with this job, it’s one of those moments where I just said, boy, I’m a lucky guy. And I said to myself, I hope we can come through for you. That’s what I was thinking.”
