Kaden Schickel injury update: Jonathan Smith gives grim outlook for Michigan State long snapper
Michigan State appears to have suffered a significant injury in the game against Michigan, following a non-contact injury for long snapper Kaden Schickel.
Schickel was hurt during the first half when he attempted to cover a punt. He was taken into the stadium tunnels by a cart following the injury.
Coach Jonathan Smith spoke to reporters early this week and provided a grim outlook.
“Yeah, we’re finalizing things but that does not look good for the rest of the year,” Smith said. “We don’t have that final final, but doesn’t look good.”
A transfer from James Madison, Kaden Schickel enrolled at Michigan State in January and quickly began competing for the starting job. He had played in eight games this season prior to his injury, recording two tackles.
Now the Spartans will have to find someone else to handle long-snapping duties.
Big Ten releases statement on post-game fight
While the Kaden Schickel injury news will sting for the Spartans, the good news is that the program is not being penalized for a post-game scuffle that broke out following the game against Michigan.

Michigan vs. MSU fight
Big Ten will not punish Wolverines or Spartans following the end-of-game fight on Saturday.
Tensions between the two sides boiled over on Saturday night when a fight broke out at the end of their game. Now, the Big Ten has released a statement on the incident.
In the statement, the Big Ten shared that it had reviewed footage of the incident. However, due to an inability to clearly see the athletes who were in the middle of the skirmish, the conference had an inconclusive review of the incident. Therefore, no further action will be taken.
“The Big Ten Conference thoroughly reviewed video of the incident that occurred at the conclusion of Saturday’s Michigan-Michigan State football game,” the statement read. “Amidst the confrontation, student-athletes from both teams were on the ground and surrounded by so many individuals that both players were completely obscured from view.”
Michigan State will now return to action, likely without Kaden Schickel, on Saturday against No. 13 Indiana.
