Former Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker continues to fight back against allegations that he committed sexual misconduct.

Michigan State is holding a Title IX hearing on Thursday and Friday. Tucker is unable to attend the hearing in person due to a medical issue. However, his lawyers released a 106-page letter Thursday morning that includes “new evidence” against his accuser, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

In the letter, one of Tucker’s attorneys contends that Brenda Tracy, who accused Tucker of sexual misconduct, “appears to have made a career out of misleading and manipulating people,” according to ESPN.

Brenda Tracy alleged in a Title IX complaint that Tucker repeatedly made sexual comments and masturbated during a phone call on April 28, 2022. The allegations led to an investigation, which ultimately ended with Tucker being fired for cause.

Michigan State believes it does not owe Mel Tucker any of the nearly $80 million remaining on his contract. However, Tucker believes that he was fired unfairly and is owed the money.

According to Thamel, the letter from Tucker’s lawyers is attempting to show contradictions in the allegations from Tracy. It also alleges that she “manipulated a key witness” and “deleted key evidence.” The letter was released moments after the hearing began on Thursday morning.

Michigan State officially fired Tucker for cause last week after giving him notice of those plans seven days prior.

According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Tucker’s attorney revealed that he is dealing with medical issues and is not able to attend the hearings.

“Mel Tucker will not attend the hearing with MSU scheduled for today and Friday,” Rittenberg tweeted out on Thursday morning. He added that Tucker’s attorney said the former Spartan coach has a “serious medical condition” that’s keeping him from going.

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini provided more context to the claim of a “serious medical condition,” providing the following statement from Tucker’s lawyer:

“We have not provided medical evidence for public consumption, but documentation exists to substantiate the serious medical condition.”

Vannini also confirmed that Tucker and his team sent a new letter to Michigan State’s board and school president claiming there’s new evidence in the case. Vannini says of it:

“Of the ~100 pages of messages, the vast majority are redacted, except for a few comments about money. No context around most of it.”
