Michigan State CB Marqui Lowery Jr. enters the NCAA Transfer Portal
Michigan State cornerback Marqui Lowery Jr. has entered his name into the transfer portal.
Lowery Jr. has spent the past three seasons with the Spartans after transferring in following a redshirt year at Louisville. He did not play at all for the Cardinals but appeared in 15 the last three years in East Lansing, including three this past fall before an injury ended his campaign. Part of his work came on defense while also working on special teams.
In total, Lowery Jr. accumulated 30 tackles and three deflections for Michigan State.
Lowery Jr., a native of Charlotte, North Carolina played high school football at Julius L. Chambers. He was a three-star prospect as the No. 1,407 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also ranked as a Top-150 CB and a Top-50 player out of his state.
Lowery Jr. is now the 23rd transfer to leave Michigan State this offseason as the fifth to do so in the spring window. He joins the likes of RB Jaelon Barbarin, OL Braden Miller, DL Simeon Barrow Jr., and a fellow corner in Eddie Pleasant.
In return, the Spartans have added a dozen transfers ahead of Jonathan Smith’s first season. Those 12 make up the No. 54 portal class per On3’s 2024 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. Five of those are defensive players to replace the nine they lost in the portal, including one defensive back in Aveon Grose (Southern Illinois).

Barrow’s intent to enter the portal was revealed by former Spartans’ interim head coach Harlon Barnett in October of last year. He withdrew from the portal just three days later, though, and decided to stay in East Lansing. However, ahead of Michigan State’s spring game on Saturday, Barrow has had a change of heart, entering the transfer portal once again during the spring window.
Barrow has spent all four seasons of his college career with the Spartans, redshirting as a freshman before becoming a three-year letter winner for Michigan State. Making 34 appearances with 30 starts, he has recorded 110 career tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks. He pairs that with two blocked field goals, one pass break-up, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
Barrow has been a All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection in the past two seasons for the Spartans, ranking No. 24 on Michigan State’s career sacks list and No. 15 on career sacks yards list.
Barrow played high school football Grovetown (GA) where he was a three-star recruit. He ranked as the No. 783 overall prospect in the nation and the No. 59 EDGE from the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
