Gehrig Normand was part of a top-five class for Michigan State that has spent the past two seasons in East Lansing. Now, he will be the first from that recruiting cycle to leave the Spartans by entering the NCAA Transfer Portal.

On3’s Joe Tipton has confirmed Norman’s entry as a transfer in this portal cycle. That comes following reporting this morning from Chris Wash.

Normand was part of the Spartans’ program for two seasons with him redshirting as a freshman before appearing in 13 games as a sophomore this past year. In total, he posted eight points, in making three of eight shot attempts from the field including two of six from three, along with three assists and a rebound in those outings. Still, he never played any more than five minutes in those games in averaging just two.

Normand, a native of North Richland Hills, Texas, played his high school basketball at Birdville as part of the 2023 class. He ranked as the No. 82 recruit as a four-star prospect in the cycle. He also rated as the No. 20 SG as well as the No. 6 player out of the state of Texas. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

With that, Norman came in alongside the highest-rated class that Michigan State had in seven cycles at No. 5 in On3’s 2023 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. He was joined by Xavier Booker, the No. 2 C and a five-star, plus Coen Carr (No. 8 SF) and Jeremy Fears (No. 11 PG), a pair of four-stars, as all three were ranked in the Top-40. That had Normand as the lowest-rated of the four signees.

Normand is now the second departure in the portal for the Spartans in this cycle since the end of the season on Sunday with their loss in the Elite Eight. Tre Holloman also plans to enter himself in the portal as of Tuesday morning per On3’s Pete Nakos.
