Michigan State‘s Tre Holloman sunk a prayer from beyond half-court to defeat Maryland 58-55 on the road Wednesday night.

The game-winning shot came just two possessions after Holloman turned the ball over and kept Maryland’s hopes alive. The Spartans’ Jaxon Kohler went on to miss a layup with 12 seconds left, leading to an opportunity for Maryland. Terapins guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie missed short on the rim with a couple of seconds left on the clock. Kohler grabbed the rebound, handing it to Holloman who threw the ball up just in time to beat the buzzer.

Holloman came off the bench for the Spartans on Wednesday night. Ironically, he struggled to shoot the ball during the contest, finishing the game 3 of 12 shooting and missing his first three attempts from deep. He scored nine points to finish the contest.

“We practice those,” Holloman told Andy Katz said the game. He revealed the last time he hit a game-winner was at the high school level. It sent his team to the state tournament.

Since it was such a low-scoring contest, the Spartans only had one player score in double figures during the winning effort. Freshman Jase Richardson scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead his team.

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said it was a “lucky shot,” but no one can say that the Spartans didn’t deserve to win the game.

“We made some bad mistakes, give them credit. We threw the ball a little bit but we deserved to win the game,” Izzo said. “To come into this place — I’m so proud of my guys. Tre made the big turnover and he made the lucky shot — but we deserve to win. I’m not taking that as a lucky shot.”

The victory improves No. 8 Michigan State to 23-5 overall (14-3 Big Ten) on the season and places them half a game ahead of rival Michigan for the top spot in the current Big Ten Conference standings.

The Spartans will move on to face No. 11 Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon, beginning their final three-game stretch of the regular season. They’ll also play Iowa before rounding out the season at home against No. 15 Michigan, which could very well decide who the regular season conference champion will be.

Tip-off between the Spartans and Badgers is set for Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET and will air live on CBS.
