After just one season with Michigan State, linebacker Ben VanSumeren is entering the transfer portal for the second time in his collegiate career, per On3’s Matt Zenitz. VanSumeren began playing at Michigan before transferring to Michigan State for the 2021 season.

The Essexville, Michigan, native had 12 tackles for the Spartans last season. Coming out of Garber High School, he was an “athlete” prospect and started his career as a fullback. In 2020, as a redshirt sophomore, he made his first two starts at linebacker.

Since VanSumeren has already transferred once, it’s likely that he’ll have to sit out the 2022 season, unless he’s able to successfully appeal for eligibility. He will have one year left to play after sitting out.

A member of the 2018 signing class, VanSumeren was a three-star prospect with offers from 14 Division-I programs. He chose Michigan after an official visit over Iowa.

Greene comes to Michigan State with one final season of eligibility. He began his career at Washington State in 2017 as a preferred walk-on, and ended up taking a redshirt season. In 2018, he played in Washington State’s final five games, spending time both at center and on special teams. He was put on scholarship after the season.

During the 2019 season, Greene played in 13 games, mostly on special teams. He also played a big role on special teams on field goal and point after attempts. During the 2020 season, Greene was named as an All-Pac-12 Conference honorable mention. He played in each of Washington State’s four games during the COVID-19 shortened season.

This past season, Greene was named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List as the top center in college football.
