Michigan State will wear throwback helmets featuring a vintage “MAC” script Saturday for its game versus Maryland. The university was once named Michigan Agricultural College.

The current name of Michigan State University was adopted in 1964.

The school was known as Michigan Agricultural College from 1909 to 1925. It was then named Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science for three decades followed by Michigan State University of Agriculture and Applied Science until it reached its current name of Michigan State University.

Its original name was Agricultural College of the State of Michigan when it was founded in 1855.

It is homecoming weekend for the Spartans, and Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa expects to experience a raucous environment.

“Michigan State is a crazy place,” Tagovailoa said. “The last time I went there, and it was cold too, fans were out there with no shirts. Amped up, ready for the game. It get’s challenging when you are out there on the field with the defense and everything and they are yelling and you are trying to make adjustments. That is the biggest challenge.”

Michigan State acting head coach Harlon Barnett said the team is focusing on the details ahead of its game versus the Terrapins.

The Spartans are coming off a brutal home loss to Washington. Michael Penix Jr. lit up the Michigan State defense like a Christmas tree, throwing for 473 yards and four touchdowns in the 41-7 victory for the Huskies. In total, Washington finished the game with 713 yards of offense compared to only 261 yards for the Spartans.

The defeat and the situation involving Mel Tucker, who Michigan State is currently in the process of firing with cause, has turned a potentially exciting season for the Spartans into a downhill spiral quite quickly.

It doesn’t mean the players don’t have a chance to turn their season around, even if the Tucker situation looms over them despite it not involving them. The team is hoping to get back on track with Big Ten play kicking into full gear.

“We’re 2-1 right now,” Barnett said. “We have a winning record. We’re at the beginning of the Big Ten season. We had a great showing on Saturday with the fans and the energy going into the game. I hope the fans bring that same energy and passion again this Saturday. We will bring it ourselves even more so as a team.”
