Michigan State travels to Maryland on Saturday for a key Big Ten East matchup early in the season. The winner will put itself in a position to make a run at the Big Ten East with an upset win or two. The loser, however, is going to be staring at a difficult stretch of conference games. For the Spartans, if they want to win, they need a big game from quarterback Payton Thorne.

While speaking to the media, Payton Thorne gave his thoughts on Maryland ahead of their game on Saturday.

“They’ve got good athletes,” Payton Thorne said. “They’ve got a couple good corners. Their safeties are solid players as well, and they’re gonna be a good team.”

“They’ve gonna have really, really big guys up front, you know, that move well. They do some different things. They play a decent amount of coverages, and so, we’re just gonna have to do a good job identifying it and executing our plan that we put together.”

After a good 2021 season, Payton Thorne has struggled to start the 2022 season. He has thrown for 900 yards through four games but has thrown seven touchdowns and six interceptions. He was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2019.

Payton Thorne on outside noise

Michigan State has gotten off to a disappointing start in 2022, following a surprisingly good 2021 season. Now, quarterback Payton Thorne has a confession. It’s hard not to hear the outside noise.

“Yeah, I don’t pay attention to the noise. It’s not hard to block out. Sometimes it is hard not to see. But it’s not hard to block out, you know. I care what my teammates think about, I care what my coaches think about me and outside of that, I care what my family thinks about me. But other than that, all the people on the outside, they don’t know what’s going on, totally,” Payton Thorne said.

“There are select people that aren’t in the program that have been in football and know what’s going on, but the majority of people, they just don’t know. And that’s nothing against them. They’ve just never been in it, they’re not in our team meeting room, they’re not in our quarterback meetings. So, I don’t have a problem blocking all that stuff out.”
