Prized 2023 lineman Clay Wedin commits to Michigan State
Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day lineman Clay Wedin still had more visits on the docket when he left Michigan State over the weekend.
Namely, a June 24 official visit to Auburn. But the No. 32 interior offensive lineman in the On3 Consensus knew he’d already found a home. Wedin committed to the Spartans Tuesday night, choosing Mel Tucker and Co. over Auburn, Florida and Florida State. This was his first and only visit to Michigan State, and he simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity to join what’s being built in East Lansing.
“It was a very close race between them and a couple other schools,” Wedin told On3. “But I knew what I was looking for in a program, and I knew what I wanted both from the athletic side and the academic side of the university. … It was a great spot and what led to me committing there was that they checked every single box I have.”
“… My most important factors are development, culture, stability. And then I have smaller factors like, ‘How do I fit into the team?’ I couldn’t find anything they didn’t check or that was a negative to them.”
Michigan State’s development set them apart for Clay Wedin
Development was a top priority, and Wedin has the utmost faith in offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic to do exactly that.

“I know without a doubt that Coach Kap and Coach Novak will get me to my ceiling,” he said. “And that once they get me there, we can break down that ceiling and get me to a second story for my development.”
Head coach Mel Tucker was also a major factor for Wedin, who believes the Spartans’ head man has a unique vision he didn’t find anywhere else.
“Not many people have that at all,” he added. “He is not looking to consistently to be just winning bowl games, whether it’s a New Year’s Six bowl or not. What he is looking to do is win national championships year in and year out. We’re going all the way or we’re going home. And that was another huge thing that we shared that mindset.”
Wedin is the 11th member of the Spartans’ 2023 class, which sits just outside the top 10 of the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings.
