Oakland transfer forward Trey Townsend is no longer planning to visit Michigan State, Tony Paul of The Detroit News reported. Townsend reportedly visited with Michigan, Arizona and Ohio State thus far and has no more visits planned.

He also had a visit planned with Louisville that did not end up happening.

Townsend was a two-time All-Horizon League selection and won the conference’s Player of the Year award in 2023-24 after leading a first-place finish in the league plus a victory in the conference tournament championship to reach the NCAA Tournament. He notably helped the Golden Grizzlies take down Kentucky in the first round.

He averaged 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists for Oakland this past season. Across four seasons, Townsend has logged 1,813 points and 889 rebounds. One more season in college gives him the chance to become a 2,000-point scorer while also logging 1,000 career rebounds — a feat not every forward gets to compete for.

During the last three games of his Oakland career, he averaged 28.3 points, which included a 38-point performance in the Horizon League championship game, defeating Milwaukee 83-76 in the process. He followed that up with a 17-point performance against UK, and then gave a 30-point effort against NC State, who would go on to appear in this past season’s Final Four.

Trey Townsend was not ranked coming out of Oxford (MI) High School in the 2020 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the No. 85 overall player according to On3’s Transfer Portal Player Rankings.

Michigan State is coming off of a 20-15 record this past season to reach the NCAA Tournament for the 26th consecutive season under coach Tom Izzo. The Spartans should once again figure to be a contender in the Big Ten next year as they aim to make it 27 March Madness appearances in a row.

Although Michigan State won’t land Townsend, they’ll hope to pick up another player in the transfer portal. The Spartans have already lost center Mady Sissoko to the portal and Izzo confirmed that AJ Hoggard will not return, so they can use a few players to beef up the roster.
