2024 Big Ten Championships: Austin Gomez returns to finals, this time with Michigan
No. 2 seed Austin Gomez (Michigan) returned to the Big Ten Wrestling finals with a 5-4 win over Maryland’s Ethen Miller at 149 pounds.
The former Big Ten champion from Wisconsin won it for the Badgers back in 2022. After injuries derailed his national title quest last year, Gomez’s swan song continued with the Wolverines in 2024.
Although he didn’t earn a takedown at the end of the match, Gomez’s attack clinched the win. Afterwards, he motioned his hand downward, not celebrating a job incomplete to this point.
Judging by the reaction on the floor, Michigan’s entire staff expected it. With head coach Sean Bormet and others nearby, it was business as usual as Gomez will get Nebraska’s Ridge Lovett in Sunday’s finals.
The two met in a memorable, but quick, match back in 2022 during the tournament at Nebraska. Gomez won by fall in just 20 seconds.
