Blake Corum sets new Michigan rushing touchdown record with Rose Bowl game-winner
After deciding to return to Michigan for one more season, Blake Corum can add another historic milestone to his resume. With his overtime touchdown against Alabama in the Rose Bowl, he set the Wolverines’ new career rushing touchdown record.
Corum took the second snap of the extra period to the end zone to give Michigan the 27-20 victory. It was his first rushing touchdown of the night, to go with a receiving touchdown, and the 56th of his career. That moved him past Anthony Thomas on Michigan’s all-time career rushing touchdowns list.
It’s yet another achievement for Corum, who continues to cement himself as one of the all-time greats in Michigan history.
Corum previously set the single-season rushing touchdown record, and his overtime touchdown on Monday was his 25th to extend that mark. He helped propel Michigan to the national title game with a monster performance, totaling 83 rushing yards, 35 receiving yards and two touchdowns on the night.
Afterward, he had a message.
“I’m my brother’s keeper. I know my brothers have my back,” Corum said. “And I told them, we score, we take this thing to overtime we’re going to win. And we came out on top. I’ll see you in Houston.”
Blake Corum’s college journey has been an interesting one. Last year, he looked like he was primed for a run at the Heisman Trophy before suffering a torn ACL. He could’ve declared for the draft, but instead, had unfinished business in Ann Arbor and decided to come back for one more season.
Ahead of the Rose Bowl, Corum reflected on his college career, which will see him compete for a national championship Jan. 8.
“I’ve thought about it a lot, and God works in mysterious ways,” Corum said. “This time last year I was getting treatment in California where I got surgery in California as well. God works in mysterious ways. Now I’m back in L.A., but I’m healthy this time. It feels great. Though my career is coming to an end, it’s been the best four years with the best fan base. I’m blessed to go to such a wonderful university. It’s wonderful. I’m definitely taking these last moments in. It’s been a heck of a journey, heck of a ride.”
Next up for Corum and the Wolverines is next week’s national title game, which will be against the winner of the Sugar Bowl between Texas and Washington.
