Dusty May reacts to Bryce Underwood flip: 'This is a big day for the University of Michigan'
Thursday was a day to remember for Michigan football. The Wolverines secured a commitment from Five Star Plus+ quarterback Bryce Underwood, flipping him from LSU – and the reactions poured in throughout the night.
That includes after the men’s basketball team’s win over Tarleton State when Dusty May met with reporters. While he couldn’t mention Underwood by name, per NCAA rules, he simply called it a “big day” for the school.
May discussed the wide-ranging effect of Underwood’s commitment not just on the football program, but the athletics department as a whole. He also made it clear he’ll be front and center at Michigan Stadium next fall.
“I’m extremely excited to watch football next year in The Big House, and be excited to watch the clips on social media,” May said, via The Wolverine’s Clayton Sayfie. “This is a big day for the University of Michigan, and there are a lot of people that contributed to making this happen. We’re all grateful for that. We’re all going to benefit from acquiring talent like that.”
Underwood is the crown jewel of the 2025 recruiting class and had been committed to LSU since January. However, Michigan ramped up its NIL efforts – including crucial help from The Champions Circle – and put together a lucrative NIL deal. On3’s Pete Nakos had more details on Underwood’s recruitment and how NIL factored into his decision.

By landing Bryce Underwood, Michigan is keeping him close to home. The Belleville product is the No. 1 overall recruit from the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
With two weeks to go until National Signing Day, Underwood’s flip is a milestone moment for the Wolverines and Sherrone Moore, who spoke with On3’s Steve Wiltfong about Michigan recruiting after the milestone commitment. On3 Director of Scouting Charles Power also called it a program-altering move.
“Underwood has explosive arm talent that immediately stood out as a high school underclassman,” Power wrote. “There has been a legitimate ‘wow factor’ to watching him throw the ball on Friday nights. He employs considerable torque to uncoil his long arms, resulting in a whippy motion that produces very high RPM’s on the football. Quite simply, the ball jumps out of his hand.
“Underwood is able to touch all areas of the field with his arm strength. He can push the ball vertically 60+ yards downfield and makes far hash throws look routine. The new Michigan commit is equally lethal in working the quick game and RPO’s, with his tight spiral and high spin rate producing rare juice on the tail of his passes.
