Before playing 13 years in the NFL and winning a Super Bowl, interior offensive lineman Jonathan Goodwin played at Michigan from 1998 to 2001. More than two decades later, his son is headed to Ann Arbor.

Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day School three-star wide receiver Channing Goodwin has announced his commitment to the Wolverines. He chose Michigan over NC State, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wake Forest and will partner with four-star quarterback Jadyn Davis, his high school teammate, in the Big House.

“It feels like home,” Goodwin told On3. “It’s a place I’m comfortable in, a place I feel I can gel well into that receiver room and be able to showcase my talent. The third reason is I got my quarterback. I’ve been tight with Jadyn since middle school and then through high school and now college. So, I’ll be looking forward to that.”

Goodwin visited Michigan four or five times ahead of his decision. Roughly three months ago, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound wideout realized he would likely end up pledging to the Wolverines.

According to Goodwin, his father was very helpful during his recruitment, but him attending Michigan did not influence his decision. Rather, Goodwin feels like he — and the Wolverines — can achieve big things.

“I don’t see us dropping off anytime soon,” said Goodwin, the No. 434 overall prospect and No. 77 wide receiver in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking. “They’re going to keep working and keep climbing that hill. (A national championship) is definitely something ultimately they’ll be working toward. It’s definitely something I want to be a part of and hopefully, I can help them out with that.”

Goodwin is close with Michigan coaches and future teammates

Goodwin already feels like he has a great connection with many people inside Michigan’s facilities. They include coaches, players and recruiting assistants.

Wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy is Goodwin’s top contact with the Wolverines. The North Carolina native is ready to learn from him down the road.

“He’s definitely a great coach,” Goodwin said. “He’s going to coach you hard on the field and love you off it. I have complete faith in him and I’m ready to go get to work with him.”

Goodwin also believes in head coach Jim Harbaugh and is confident that the former Wolverines quarterback can lead his alma mater to a title. Harbaugh coached his father in Super Bowl XLVII when he was serving in the same role with the San Francisco 49ers.

Meanwhile, the three-star is excited to reunite with Davis in the maize-and-blue. Davis, the No. 28 overall prospect and No. 4 quarterback in the On3 Industry Ranking, is currently the highest-ranked prospect in Michigan’s 2024 recruiting class.

“Especially with the receiver-quarterback connection we have, it’s huge to have a little bit of trust in working with that guy,” Goodwin said. “Obviously, him being my high school quarterback and having him in college as well, it’s something that I’ll enjoy.”
