Michigan wrestling lands Chris Cannon, Michael DeAugustino in transfer portal
Michigan wrestling stayed busy in the transfer portal with the additions of Chris Cannon and Michael DeAugustino over the weekend.
The two lightweights wrestled 133 and 125 pounds, respectively, at Northwestern and are both listed as grad transfers. Michigan previously added former Northwestern heavyweight Lucas Davison.
The Wildcat pipeline to Ann Arbor continued as the Wolverines reload ahead of the 2023-24 season.
“Grateful for the memories, the lessons, and the friendships that I’ve made during my time at Northwestern,” Cannon wrote on Instagram. “It’s bittersweet to move on, but I’m excited to take everything I’ve learned with me to the next chapter of my life. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my journey so far. Ready to bleed blue (M logo) #GoBlue.”
DeAugustino echoed his teammate’s comments about the move to Michigan.
“I’m seeing blue, time to get wild in Ann Arbor (gorilla emoji, M logo),” he wrote on Instagram.
Cannon, a two-time All-American, went 20-10 last season but went 1-2 at 133 pounds at the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships.
However, Cannon finished in 7th place at 133 in back-to-back tournaments in 2021 and ‘22. Cannon is 52-21 in his career after wrestling three varsity seasons with the Wildcats.
Cannon went 19-2 during his redshirt season in 2019-20. There are rumblings he could bump up to 141, but either way, Cannon should slide in easily at 133 or 141 next season and give the Wolverines another All-American contender.
DeAugustino should plug right in at 125 pounds next season, his final year of eligibility. The lightweight had his best season in 2021-22 when he went 15-6 and finished fourth in the country at the weight
