Former Clemson defensive lineman Tre Williams has committed to Michigan, via the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett. Williams spent five seasons at Clemson.

During his time with the Tigers, Williams amassed 44 appearances and four starts. He finished his stint at Clemson with 35 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, four sacks and two pass deflections. Williams set career highs in all of those categories this season except tackles for loss.

Williams has battled injuries throughout his career, mostly to his feet and shoulders. In 2023, Williams was forced to medically redshirt after spending most of the season sidelined following a shoulder surgery. Despite Williams’ injury issues throughout his collegiate career, he entered the college ranks as a highly-touted prospect.

Williams played high school football at St. John’s (Washington, DC), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 107 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Now, Williams will look to reach his full potential in his final collegiate season. Michigan may be the place to do just that. After all, the Wolverines only allowed 90.7 rushing yards per game this season, the fourth-least in the country.

Tre Williams won’t be the only fresh face on Michigan’s roster next season. The Wolverines are currently ranked No. 3 in On3’s 2025 Team Transfer Portal Rankings, boasting standout commits such as Justice Haynes and Damon Payne.

Michigan finished the 2024 campaign with an 8-5 record. While the Wolverines’ record was solid, their finish was spectacular, ending the season on back-to-back wins against Ohio State and Alabama. Now, Michigan will look to build on its momentum as it enters its second year under head coach Sherrone Moore.

“It was really the fundamentals, the little pieces, doing those things really, really well, and those usually end up in those results,” Moore said. “We refocused, we retooled, and really proud of our staff and our players.”

The transfer portal officially opened on Dec. 7 and closed on Dec. 28, though players on teams still playing in the postseason will get an additional five-day window to enter the portal after their seasons end.
