Dusty May, Michigan agree to new multi-year contract

Dusty May and Michigan agreed to a new multi-year contract, the school announced Friday. The news comes as Indiana – May’s alma mater – goes through its coaching search.
May is in the first season of a five-year contract with Michigan after coming in from Florida Atlantic this season. On3 and The Wolverine’s Chris Balas reported Feb. 10 the two sides were “working on” a new contract.
“I am excited to announce that Dusty and I have agreed to a new multi-year contract,” Michigan AD Warde Manuel said in a statement. “His commitment to this University and the success of the men’s basketball program has far exceeded our expectations and makes us all excited for what the future holds. I look forward to Dusty, Anna, and his family remaining a part of the fabric of this University and community for many years to come.”
May has engineered an impressive turnaround in Ann Arbor this season, taking Michigan to a 20-5 overall record and a 12-2 mark in Big Ten play entering Friday night’s rivalry game against Michigan State. The Wolverines came in as a No. 4 seed in On3’s James Fletcher III’s latest Bracketology on Thursday.
Prior to his arrival at Michigan this year, May took Florida Atlantic to a 126-69 record over his six years at the helm. The Owls notably made a run to the Final Four in 2023 and finished second in the American Athletic Conference in 2023-24 after making the jump from Conference USA.
“I am grateful to Warde (Manuel), U-M President Santa Ono, and all the members of the Board of Regents for the trust and support they have given me as the head coach,” May said in a statement. “My goal is to bring continued success to this historic program. We cannot reach that goal without the hard work that my staff and players put into this program.

“We have built a solid foundation; however, there is much more work to be done. I look forward to those challenges and what the future holds for me and my family in Ann Arbor.”
After Indiana announced Mike Woodson would be stepping down as head coach at the end of the season, Dusty May’s name came up right away. A manager under the late Bob Knight, some wondered if he’d consider going back to Bloomington to replace Woodson.
After Michigan defeated IU at Assembly Hall, May addressed that speculation. When he did, he reaffirmed his commitment to the Wolverines through his first year.
“That stuff’s crazy,” May said. “I love being at Michigan, I love our team. We’re fighting like crazy, that’s it. This place is my foundation but I’m very, very happy at the University of Michigan. Came here to win a game and mission accomplished.”
