Dusty May and the Michigan Wolverines were riding high during their six-game winning-streak, but then they fell to the Michigan State Spartans on Friday evening.

It was a disappointing result for May’s team, as they couldn’t overcome Tom Izzo’s bunch, as they lost by 13 inside the Crisler Center. 21 points from Vladislav Goldin wasn’t enough, and Michigan’s record dropped to 20-6 on the season.

Afterwards, May spoke with reporters, letting them in on how he hopes his team will respond to the loss. The message is certainly one of hope, as the Wolverines will be looking to bounce back in a big way in the coming days.

“This can’t turn into two losses,” May preached. “We have a lot of — we’re a half-game out of first place in the Big Ten in mid-February. There’s no time to hang our hat, hang our heads and mope and feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve got to, like I said, we’ve got to unify and figure out a way to get better tomorrow, take care of our bodies and get our edge back.

“You know, in rivalry stuff, sometimes that there’s a basketball game that requires execution and it requires poise. We didn’t look like a more poised, veteran team tonight. I think, for the most part of this year, we’ve looked — we’ve looked like a really, you know, connected veteran group.”

Regardless of the fact that Michigan dropped their first home game of the season on Friday night, they’re still in a tremendous spot moving forward, as long as they don’t let this loss linger. They have some tough games coming up that will need their full attention, including a showdown with Nebraska on Monday evening in Lincoln at the Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Additionally, there’s a chance at retribution for Michigan over the next few weeks. The Wolverines will end their regular season on Mar. 9 with a trip to the Breslin Center, where they’ll meet the Spartans once again. A win over Michigan State after last night’s game would be a nice feather in their cap.

All told, Dusty May has Michigan humming during his first season in Ann Arbor, even if his battle with Tom Izzo on Friday didn’t go his way. With 20 wins on the season and looking for more, the Wolverines will be a team to look out for over the next month and change, that’s for sure.
