Fired Michigan co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss releases statement amid ongoing criminal investigation
The Michigan football program made a massive decision on Friday afternoon to fire co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss. The choice was made in connection to a criminal investigation involving Weiss that University of Michigan police called ‘computer access crimes’.
Now, Weiss has shared his own statement via Twitter that both thanked the program as well as expressed his hope and intent to return to football once the matter is behind him.
Weiss had been with Michigan over the past two seasons when they made the College Football Playoff. He was simply the quarterbacks coach in 2021 but was promoted to co-offensive coordinator last offseason. Alongside Sherrone Moore, they helped lead the Wolverines to be a Top-10 offense with an average of 40.4 points per game.
Before he came to Ann Arbor, Weiss spent 10 years in the NFL with Jim Harbaugh’s brother, John Harbaugh, and the Baltimore Ravens
However, an announcement came earlier this week that Weiss had been placed on administrative leave amid the investigation. In UM police’s report, they said the incident took place December from 21st to the 23rd.
“The University of Michigan Police Department is investigating a report of computer access crimes that occurred at Schembechler Hall during December 21-23, 2022,” University of Michigan Deputy Chief of Police Crystal James said in a statement to ESPN earlier in the week. “Since this is an ongoing investigation, there is no additional information to share.”
With several stories swirling around the Wolverine’s program already this offseason, this is one that came from left field. Now, the team will have to decide what they want to do with their offensive coordinator spot. Meanwhile, Weiss will now deal with the repercussions of this investigation.

“Michigan co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss has been placed on leave, according to an athletic department spokesman, as the school’s police department told ESPN it is investigating a “report of computer access crimes” that occurred in December at the team’s football facility,” the ESPN report read.
Due to the investigation still being an ongoing one, no further information was provided. However, they are looking into an incident that took place at Schembechler Hall in Ann Arbor.
Weiss provided a statement on the situation to ESPN, saying he is “fully cooperating” with the investigation. Probably to no surprise but he is looking forward to everything getting wrapped up and moving on.
“I am aware of the ongoing investigation by the University of Michigan Police Department and fully cooperating with investigators,” Weiss said. “I look forward to the matter being resolved. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, I will not have any further comment.”
A statement from the University of Michigan was a bit briefer. Only four words were required, letting everyone know Weiss was placed on leave.
“Matt Weiss is on leave,” said Michigan associate athletic director for public and media relations David Ablauf.
