Former North Carolina wrestling All-American Lachlan McNeil committed to Michigan out of the NCAA transfer portal. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

McNeil went 25-7 this season and finished 5th at 149 pounds the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships. It was his first time at the weight in his varsity career.

McNeil wrestled at 141 pounds the previous three seasons and finished 4th in 2023 and 6th in ’24. He’ll be in contention for a national title in 2026.

Over the course of his career, McNeil holds a record of 75-23, per WrestleStat. His losses at this year’s NCAA Tournament came to Penn State’s Shayne Van Ness and Ohio State’s Dylan D’Emilio.

McNeil’s finish at NCAAs ensured he was the sixth Tar Heel with three or more All-American honors, joining Jan Michaels, Rob Koll (the current head coach), TJ Jaworsky, Justin Harty and Austin O’Connor. North Carolina has also had at least one All-American in seven straight tournaments.

UNC lost a big one in three-time All-American Lachlan McNeil. However, the team added 2021 NCAA champion and two-time All-American AJ Ferrari.

Ferrari will have two years of eligibility remaining and plugs in as an instant national title contender at 197 pounds in 2026. He finished in 3rd place at the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

His youngest brother Angelo is expected to be in title contention (184 pounds) in 2026, coming out of redshirt during his freshman season at Iowa. His middle brother Anthony wrestled at Long Island University this past season.

Ferrari is 50-2 in his career, with his only losses coming to 2025 NCAA champion Stephen Buchanan, who won it for Iowa this year, and former West Virginia wrestler Noah Adams. Ferrari was just a freshman in 2021 when he lost that match 3-2.
