JD PicKell addresses Michigan's biggest question mark entering season
Michigan hopes to remain in contention in college football after breaking into the playoff last season. The Wolverines are looking at a lot of transition from last year to this one. With that said, there’s one question that, once answered, could set them up for success in 2022. That question is the QB battle and On3’s JD PicKell thinks there might not be a wrong answer.
PicKell discussed McNamara versus McCarthy in a recent episode of ‘The Hard Count‘. He says fall camp is going to determine a lot in who gets to start game one.
“Michigan is coming off of a really exciting season…One variable that still in some way, shape or form that seems like yet to be decided is who’s playing quarterback for Michigan this coming year? You got two, in my opinion, really good options,” said PicKell. “Cade McNamara and JJ McCarthy are going to battle it out. It sounds like fall camp is going to more or less be the determining stage if you will.”
McNamara and McCarthy both saw time for the Wolverines last season. McNamara led the way for Michigan with 2,576 yards and 15 touchdowns. McCarthy saw time in 11 games of his own with 516 yards and 5 touchdowns. While it might be better off to pick and focus on just one, PicKell thinks they could continue on with their two-QB model.

“(There’s) also a pretty good chance that they both play during the season. I know there’s a two quarterback system they kind of had going last year,” PicKell said. “We’ll see what happens.”
Michigan has a lot of production to replace but not at quarterback. The only problem is they’re still unsure which one will be under center when they open against Colorado State on September 3rd. As JD PicKell said, it may all come down to who sets themself apart heading into the 2022 season.
