JJ McCarthy discusses Jim Harbaugh to NFL rumors, future at Michigan
Last week was interesting for Michigan fans, especially when offensive coordinator Josh Gattis left. But another key piece of their offense said this week he isn’t going anywhere.
JJ McCarthy, who served as Michigan’s backup quarterback this past year, told the Detroit Free Press he’s not planning on going anywhere. He was a highly touted recruit out of high school, coming in as the No. 13 recruit in the state of Florida, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Given Harbaugh’s NFL flirtations and Gattis’ departure, questions have risen about what’s next for McCarthy. He told the Detroit Free Press’ Angelique Changelis about that.
“I’m a Wolverine and will be for the entirety of my college career,” McCarthy said. “I came here to find out what being a Michigan Man is all about, and after one year I know it’s the best place for my development as a scholar, football player, and most importantly as a human being.”
There’s your answer — and he left no room for doubt.
In 11 games as a freshman, McCarthy went 34 for 59 for 516 yards and two touchdowns in the air. But his running ability makes him stand out, especially since he rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

“BREAKING: Michigan OC Josh Gattis is accepting the Miami’s offensive coordinator job, per source,” tweeted Feldman. “The 38-year-old Gattis who helped the Wolverines to the Big Ten title in 2021, won the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach. Big addition for the Canes.”
Coming off a tremendous season, Gattis helped Jim Harbaugh lead the Wolverines to the College Football Playoff. However, the uncertainly of Harbaugh’s future may have led Gattis to make a move with his future at the forefront of his thinking.
Gattis leaving Michigan for Miami is a gigantic coup for new Hurricanes leader Mario Cristobal. As he looks to rebuild Miami into a contender, hiring one of the top assistants in the nation is a huge step in the right direction.
Michigan went 12-2 this season, just one year after going 2-6, to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff. The Wolverines fell to Georgia in the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
