Michigan star freshman guard Jett Howard picked up an injury during the Wolverines last game against Michigan State, and head coach Juwan Howard did not have any updates on his health afterwards.

“I haven’t heard anything yet,” the elder Howard said in his press conference. “Just praying.”

Despite losing their second-leading scorer, Michigan went on to defeat the Spartans.

Howard is averaging 14.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game as a freshman for his father’s Michigan team, which currently 15-12 on the season and 9-7 in conference play. He is shooting 41.8% from the field and 36.9% from beyond the arc.

“One thing about Jett, he’s a tough kid,” Juwan Howard said. “He really is. I would never forget when we were in London, he was supposed to play against Kentucky and he was going to make me play him. That shows you how much he’s passionate about the game.

Jett Howard injury latest setback in season of up-and-down health

Jett Howard picked up his latest injury Saturday against Michigan State when he landed on the foot of Joey Hauser. It appeared he injured his right ankle on the play.

“After a brief period down on the floor at Crisler Center, Howard got up and made it to the Michigan bench. Once there, he pulled his right leg up to his chest, wrapping his arms around his leg and sitting still for a moment,” On3’s Andrew Graham wrote of the injury.

“As trainers began to work on the ankle and leg, Howard could be seen in intense pain, wincing and gesticulating on the sideline, even leaning over on to the chair next to him and covering his face.”

It is his second injury of Big Ten conference play. He hurt his left ankle against Minnesota in January and missed the rest of that game as well as Michigan’s next game against Purdue.

“No, I don’t have any information to give you on Jett, other than, as you saw, he was in a boot,” Juwan Howard said after the game against the Golden Gophers. “He came back out there to the second half to support his teammates, which was great. Feel sorry for the young man because I hate missing basketball. He’s in love with the game of basketball and wanted to help his teammates on both ends of the floor.”
