The FBI has been working with the University of Michigan police department “for months” to investigate computer crimes committed by former Wolverines offensive coordinator Matt Weiss, the Detroit Free Press’ Tony Garcia reported Thursday. The university fired Weiss in January after a criminal investigation started.

In late December, university police received word of “computer access crimes” in Schembechler Hall and placed Weiss on leave before ultimately deciding to fire him. He has not been arrested, but police confirmed the FBI’s involvement in an email to the Free Press.

“The University of Michigan Police Department has partnered with the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding the Matt Weiss unauthorized computer access incident,” the email read. “Currently, the investigation is extensive, ongoing, and is of the utmost priority. Additional information will be provided when available.”

In January, ESPN reported Weiss was placed on leave for the incident. There haven’t been many updates on the situation since, although Weiss told ESPN of his intentions to cooperate with the investigation.

A university employee told police about “fraudulent activity involving someone accessing university email accounts without authorization” inside Schembechler Hall in January, according to ESPN.

“The University of Michigan Police Department is investigating a report of computer access crimes that occurred at Schembechler Hall during December 21-23, 2022,” University of Michigan Deputy Chief of Police Crystal James said in the statement. “Since this is an ongoing investigation there is no additional information to share.”

After the university fired him, Weiss took to social media to release a statement on the decision.

“I am proud of the success we achieved over the last two seasons and grateful to all of the Michigan players, coaches, and staff. The potential of Team 144 knows no bounds,” Weiss wrote. “I have nothing but respect for the University of Michigan and the people who make it such a great place. I look forward to putting this matter behind me and returning my focus to the game that I love.”

The 2022 season was Weiss’ only year as Michigan’s offensive coordinator after previously serving as the Wolverines’ quarterbacks coach in 2021. Before that, he spent a decade with the Baltimore Ravens, working his way up from head coach assistant and quality control coach to running backs coach from 2019-20.

The “computer access crimes” allegedly committed by Weiss are unrelated to the ongoing sign-stealing investigation by the NCAA into Michigan, according to MLive’s Andrew Kahn.
